On Saturday, June 14, the South Lake Democrats hosted a peaceful demonstration at Center Lake Park to stand up for democracy and speak out against authoritarianism. The event began at 10 am and drew approximately 1,000 community members, many of whom brought bold, creative signs and a strong sense of purpose to reaffirm a simple but powerful message: “We are a democracy, not a monarchy.”
Participants gathered along State Road 50 at Center Lake Park, located east of 7th Street and west of West Avenue. The demonstration aimed to highlight the foundational principles of American government and encourage civic engagement.
“Our goal was to remind the community of the foundational principles of our government,” said a representative from the South Lake Democrats. “We welcome all who share our commitment to freedom, fairness, and peaceful expression.”
Organizers emphasized that the demonstration was rooted in nonviolent action. Attendees were encouraged to remain respectful, peaceful, and prepared to de-escalate any tensions that might arise from counter-demonstrations or disagreements.
The event served as a strong show of unity and a reaffirmation of democratic values in the South Lake community.
