The Montverde Academy yearbook program is celebrating a major milestone after “If Only You Knew,” the most recent edition of the Interlachen yearbook, was selected as a National Scholastic Press Association (NSPA) Pacemaker finalist, one of the most prestigious honors in student journalism.
Pacemaker awards recognize yearbooks that are innovative, progressive, and exceptional in both storytelling and design. The Pacemaker distinction places If Only You Knew among the top 17 percent of yearbooks in the country, with just 58 finalists selected nationwide. Earlier today, each yearbook student was recognized for Excellence during Upper School assembly.
This achievement is particularly significant as it marks the first Pacemaker finalist in school history, accomplished in only three years of revitalizing and rebuilding the yearbook program. Unlike many academic competitions, Pacemaker entries are not judged using a rubric; instead, yearbooks compete directly against one another at a national level, making finalist recognition especially meaningful.
Florida also stood out in this year’s competition, earning second place among states with 10 Pacemaker finalists, highlighting the overall strength of scholastic journalism across the state.
Yearbook teacher Mrs. Savannah Miller expressed immense pride in the students’ dedication and growth, emphasizing that this success reflects not only their hard work but also the collective support of the school community. From time and encouragement to resources and trust in the program’s vision, every contribution helped make this achievement possible.
Pacemaker winners will be announced in April at the NSPA Spring National High School Journalism Convention in Minneapolis. Regardless of the final outcome, being named a finalist already represents a landmark accomplishment for the program.
Congratulations to the yearbook staff on this historic recognition!
