Lake County officials have provided an update regarding the roadway depression that appeared on Empire Church Road in Groveland on February 2.
After securing the area, the County retained a geotechnical engineering firm to conduct a thorough site evaluation. The assessment has confirmed that the depression is a sinkhole — a naturally occurring condition in parts of Central Florida due to the limestone geology beneath the surface.
Engineers have developed a recommended repair plan to stabilize the affected area. The County will now seek quotes from qualified contractors to complete the work. Once a contractor is selected and approved, repairs will begin as quickly as possible.
County officials recognize that the road closure has disrupted daily routines, commutes, and access for nearby residents. From the outset, safety has remained the top priority. Crews will continue monitoring the site as the repair process moves forward.
Construction timelines will be shared once a contractor has been selected.

County leaders thank the community for its patience as they work toward a permanent repair.
