The Friends of the Marion Baysinger Memorial County Library are making a difference in Groveland—by turning local support into meaningful programs and services for residents of all ages.
The Friends, a 100% locally focused nonprofit, exist for one purpose: to raise money and reinvest it directly into the library and the community it serves.
Last year alone, the Friends helped fund more than 40 free library programs, reaching nearly 10,000 residents—from children and teens to adults and seniors. While tax funding typically covers library operations and facilities, it does not fund most library programs. Across the country, those programs are often made possible by Friends of the Library groups. Getting that message across, supporters say, is vital to understanding the value of community involvement.
The Friends of the Groveland Library have also earned the trust of strong local partners. This year, the organization received a grant from SECO Energy. In addition, AAAmerican Storage, a Groveland family business, continues its support by storing and protecting books and supplies used for library book sales.
Fundraising events remain an important part of the organization’s outreach. Signature events such as Sip ’n Spell not only raise funds but also attract new supporters and volunteers.
On Friday, February 6 at 7 pm “Raise A Glass, Raise A Reader” fundraiser will be held to offer an evening of spelling games, laughter, and fun.
GAME PLAY: Words are announced, used in a sentence, definition shown on the screen. Use your answer board to spell the word before the timer runs out. Each correct spelling earns 1 point — you don’t lose points for incorrect answers. Teams also compete using a deck of strategy cards that challenge other teams as they try to outwit and outplay their opponents. The Prize: The winning team earns a spot on the Golden Bee Wall of Fame, proudly displayed at Barrels and Boards with your team photo! Full Barrels and Boards menu available for purchase.
