Lake County is issuing an update to its Feb. 20 cold-weather shelter announcement due to updated forecasts calling for colder overnight temperatures than previously expected. In addition to the shelter dates already announced for Monday and Tuesday, the County will also open a cold-weather shelter tonight, Sunday, Feb. 22, to ensure residents have a safe place to stay.
 
The decision to issue new information comes as weather conditions have shifted, prompting County officials to take proactive steps to protect vulnerable residents. The County continues to monitor forecasts and will provide additional updates as needed.
 

Cold-Weather Shelter Location: LifePointe Church, 3551 E. Orange Ave., Eustis

·       Additional Overnight Opening:
o   Sunday, Feb. 22 (opens at 5 pm; closes at 7 am Monday)
 
·       Previously Announced Dates Remain In Effect:
o   Monday, Feb. 23 (opens at 5 pm Monday; closes at 7 am Tuesday)
o   Tuesday, Feb. 24 (opens at 5 pm Tuesday; closes at 7 am Wednesday)
 
Shelters operate overnight only and are not open between 7 am and 5 pm
Residents are encouraged to follow the Lake County Florida Emergency Management Facebook page for real-time updates and to text COLD to 888-777 to receive cold-weather resource information directly to their phones.
 

Free Transportation to Cold Weather Shelter

February 23rd and February 24th

LakeXpress, the County’s fixed-route bus service, will provide free transportation for residents riding to the shelter utilizing the following shuttle schedule. Residents may ride LakeXpress for free to the Citizens or Ardice Transfer Centers from any LakeXpress bus stop by telling the driver they’re traveling to the cold-weather shelter.

Residents who are unable to access a LakeXpress route or reach a shuttle stop and need transportation to the cold weather shelter may call Lake County Connection at (352) 742-2612 before 2 pm to make arrangements for pickup.

The shelter will close at 7 am and Lake County buses will be available at that time to transport residents to their regularly scheduled shuttle stops.

Residents can receive cold-weather resource updates by texting COLD to 888-777.
