Memorial Day is a solemn day of remembrance of those who died serving in the American Armed Forces. Formally known as Decoration Day, the commemorative started after the Civil War to honor dead Union and Confederate soldiers by decorating their graves with flowers, wreaths, and flags. Decoration Day was renamed after World War II and officially declared Memorial Day in 1967. The annual tribute continues:
Monday, May 28
CLERMONT: The Memorial Day observance will be held on May 28 at 11 am at Clermont Waterfront pavilion on Lake Minneola. (330 Third St., Clermont).
The program is sponsored by the Sgt. I.W. Hatcher, Jr. South Lake Marine Corp Detachment; Tomoka Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution; VFW Post #5277 and Korean War Veterans group. Also participating will be
the South Lake High School ROTC, Blessed Sacrament Knights of Columbus, and
South Lake Scouts.
Donations of small toiletry items for the troops would be appreciated.
GROVELAND: The Memorial Day observance will be held on Monday, May 28 at 10 am at Veterans Park in front of the Puryear Building at 243 S. Lake Ave.
The City will present a red rose to the family of each fallen hero from Groveland and lay a wreath at the base of each flagpole at the park, which flies flags from each branch of the armed services. The Groveland Historical Society will present each family with a photo of a memorial banner that commemorates their loved one’s service.
The Groveland Historical Society and the City of Groveland recently worked together to create a series of banners that memorialize each hometown hero’s sacrifice. The banners are displayed along State Road 50 in downtown Groveland. visit Hero Banners
The Groveland Police Explorers will be grilling hamburgers and accepting donations for an upcoming trip at the Memorial Day event, which is free and open to the public.
