The last day for parents to enroll students in Lake County Virtual School is 4 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 13.
Registration will reopen for the spring term at a later date.
Enrollment requests for Lake County Virtual School soared this year as parents sought alternatives to traditional instruction in brick-and-mortar school buildings in light of the COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic. Last year, the school had about 145 full-time students enrolled. So far this year, about 5,500 full-time students and an additional 1,800 students have enrolled part-time.
The district offered four instructional options this school year: traditional instruction in brick-and-mortar school buildings; full-time instruction at home through Lake County Virtual School; full-time instruction at home through Lake Live, which keeps students connected to their brick-and-mortar school; and Modified Day, an approach that allows students to take some classes in the school buildings and other classes at home.
Virtual school enrollment requests continue to come in daily. Many are from parents who initially sought other instructional options and then changed their minds. Some of those requests are still being processed. District leaders say enforcing a deadline will allow more stability for students and staff.
Exceptions will be considered on a case-by-case basis for students who for health or other reasons require full-time instruction at home.
