Kevin Boyle, Head Coach of the Montverde Academy Boys Varsity Basketball team, was presented with the Jersey Mike’s Naismith High School Coach of the Year award for 2020. This is the third time Coach Boyle has earned this prestigious award, tying for the most won by any high school coach.
“I’m humbled to receive the Naismith Coach of the Year Award, and I’d like to thank those who helped make this happen,” said Boyle. “I’d like to thank Kelly, my wife, for her vision and support; Dr. Kasey C. Kesselring, Montverde Academy Head of School, for building a great culture on campus that promotes excellence in academics as well as athletics; and Rae Miller, my great friend and loyal Assistant Coach, for his continued dedication to achieving the highest potential possible in everything we do.”
Coach Boyle has won the Naismith award twice in the last three years at the Academy. This year, he shared the honor with one of his players, Cade Cunningham (’20), who earned the 2020 Naismith Player of the Year award, and in 2018, RJ Barrett (‘18), MVA alumnus and New York Knick player, also won the Naismith. The MVA Eagles Varsity team finished their 2020 season with a perfect 25-0 record, averaging a 39-point margin over their opponents.
“On behalf of Jersey Mike’s, I am proud to present the Naismith Coach of the Year award to Coach Kevin Boyle in recognition of his excellence in the sport,” said Todd Quinzi, Jersey Mike’s Area Director for the State of Florida. “Part of Jersey Mike’s culture is about making a difference and helping others, and the Naismith award recognizes the difference that Coach Boyle is making both in the sport and in the lives of his players. He is a coach and role model, teaching players the skills to relentlessly pursue their goals in sports, which helps them achieve success in their lives.”
This is sixth time Coach Boyle has earned a National High School Coach of the Year award, and the third time he has been honored with the Naismith award (2011, 2018 and 2020). An experienced coach who has trained the likes of NBA players such as Ben Simmons (’15), D’Angelo Russell (’14) and Barrett, Coach Boyle was recognized by MaxPreps as National Coach of the Decade, and the MVA Eagles team declared Team of the Decade.
“We are happy to see Coach Boyle receive recognition for all that the work that he’s done at Montverde Academy and as part of our South Lake community,” said Jake Richards, Jersey Mike’s franchisee. “I am a fan of MVA and enjoy attending games to support the athletes. We like seeing the players in high school athletics and follow their progress on to compete at the collegiate and even professional level. We congratulate Coach Boyle on his achievement and wish him and the MVA Eagles teams continued success.”
Coach Boyle has developed nine first-round NBA picks, with six of those players going within the top three picks of the NBA Draft, and four players being selected as NBA All-Stars. Boyle currently has 24 former players playing basketball professionally across 13 countries. He brings his knowledge and training expertise to student-athletes from all over the world as the Founder and Director of the Montverde Academy Center for Basketball Development. As part of this advanced basketball training program, student-athletes pursue rigorous academics balanced with focused development of their on-court fundamentals, technique and athletic capabilities to achieve the highest potential possible both academically and athletically. The program has a 100 percent college acceptance rate with more than 30 student-athletes earning scholarships to play collegiate basketball.
