Orlando Health South Lake Hospital has rolled out a new and innovative technology to enhance infant security and safety through their hospital stay and beyond. Replacing the traditional ink and paper method for collecting a baby’s footprint, the new CertaScan technology allows hospital staff to collect a digital footprint to be paired with the baby’s headshot and mother’s fingerprints. The images are then securely stored in an online database that only the parents can access.

After the scan is complete, parents are given a printed footprint certificate, as well as a unique login to access their child’s footprint on the Certascan database, where they can download the image to be used for their personal mementos. These additional benefits are provided as a gift from Orlando Health South Lake Hospital at no cost to families.

“We take the safety of our patients and guests very seriously, and I know this new technology will give both parents and team members some peace of mind,” said Lisa Bishop, director of nursing operations at Orlando Health South Lake Hospital. “In addition to providing an extra layer of security, CertaScan will help streamline our workflow and efficiency, allowing our team to focus more on direct patient care.”

Much like fingerprints, footprints are biometric and unique to each baby, so they can be used for precise, forensic identification throughout a lifetime. CertaScan has partnered with the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC) so that images captured by the system can be used to identify a child in the event of an abduction, natural disaster or other emergency. Parents also have the option to upload photos of their children as they age into the CertaScan system to ensure the NCMEC has the most current image.
