A significant milestone has been reached in the effort to expand healthcare education opportunities in South Lake County, as a private donor has committed a $1 million gift to support the construction of a new Health Professions Academic Building on Lake-Sumter State College’s South Lake Campus.

The generous contribution reduces the project’s remaining fundraising goal to $9 million and further accelerates plans for the state-of-the-art facility, which is designed to address the growing demand for healthcare professionals throughout the region.

The donation builds upon momentum established earlier this year when the Lake-Sumter State College Foundation received a transformative $10 million matching grant from the Live Well Foundation of South Lake. Through the grant, every dollar raised toward the project is matched on a one-to-one basis, helping the Foundation reach its overall $20 million fundraising goal for the Health Professions Academic Building.

College and Foundation leaders say the new facility will play a vital role in expanding healthcare education programs, increasing student capacity, and strengthening the regional workforce pipeline. The building is expected to provide modern learning environments and enhanced training opportunities for students pursuing careers in high-demand healthcare fields.

With $9 million left to raise, community members, businesses, and philanthropic partners are encouraged to support the campaign. Contributions will directly impact the future of healthcare education and help prepare the next generation of healthcare professionals to serve South Lake County and the surrounding communities.

The Lake-Sumter State College Foundation continues to seek community support as it works to complete funding for the transformational project and advance the College’s mission of meeting critical workforce needs across the region.

Michelle Delaney, South Lake Tablet

The skies over South Lake County came alive on Independence Day as fireworks burst into brilliant displays of red, white, and blue. From one end of the county to the other, colorful explosions lit the night sky while thunderous booms rolled across neighborhoods, lakes and open countryside.

For those fortunate enough to live on the water, the evening offered a front-row seat to the celebration. Families watched from boats, docks and backyards, enjoying spectacular views reflected across the lakes. It seemed as though everyone had joined in commemorating America’s 250th birthday. The night was festive, patriotic and undeniably loud.

As I watched the fireworks, I found myself thinking about how this tradition began.

Fireworks have been associated with Independence Day almost since the birth of the nation. When the Declaration of Independence was adopted on July 4, 1776, Americans sought ways to celebrate their newfound freedom. John Adams famously predicted that future generations would mark the occasion with “illuminations,” a term that referred to lights, bonfires and fireworks. The first organized Independence Day celebration took place in Philadelphia on July 4, 1777, featuring bells, cannon fire, music and fireworks. Nearly 250 years later, the tradition remains one of the most recognizable symbols of American independence.

Yet while the dazzling displays bring joy to millions of people, they can create a very different experience for our pets.

I was reminded of that reality throughout the evening as fireworks erupted around my home. Sharing the house with four cats and two dogs gave me a close-up view of how differently animals experience the holiday.

The cats wanted nothing to do with the festivities. As the explosions intensified, they retreated to the back of a bookcase, huddling together in what they apparently considered the safest place in the house.

My son’s Border Collie spent much of the evening trembling. Every boom seemed to send another wave of anxiety through him. My son’s Australian Shepherd handled the situation differently. He maintained his composure and carried himself with his usual dignity, but his eyes told another story. Behind his calm appearance was a dog who was just as uneasy about the relentless noise outside.

Their reactions were a reminder that animals hear the world differently than we do. What sounds festive and exciting to us can be overwhelming and frightening to them. Veterinarians frequently warn that the Fourth of July is one of the busiest times of the year for lost pets, as frightened animals attempt to escape the noise.

As the evening wore on, the fireworks continued to paint the sky with breathtaking colors. Neighbors gathered outdoors, children laughed, and the sounds of celebration echoed across the county. It was, by every measure, a memorable Independence Day.

Eventually, the final fireworks faded, the last distant boom rolled away, and a welcome quiet settled over South Lake County. My pets slowly emerged from their hiding places, reassured that the strange noises had finally ended.

The Fourth of July remains a cherished American tradition, connecting us to the celebrations that began with the nation’s founding nearly two and a half centuries ago. It is a night of community, patriotism and wonder. But it is also a reminder that while we celebrate our freedom beneath a sky filled with fireworks, some of our most loyal companions are simply waiting for the silence to return.

I enjoyed the fireworks from the most comfortable, mosquito-free spot imaginable—right in front of my television. As I flipped through the channels, I was treated to spectacular displays from New York, Philadelphia, and cities across the country.

My favorite celebration was the Macy’s Fourth of July Fireworks in New York. The display was absolutely beautiful, and the entertainment that accompanied it was just as impressive. It captured everything I love about the holiday—great music, dazzling fireworks, and a sense of shared celebration.

More than 75 years after four young Black men were accused of a crime that would forever alter their lives and stain Florida’s justice system, the descendants of the Groveland Four have received another measure of long-awaited justice.

This year, the Florida Legislature awarded $4 million to the families of Ernest Thomas, Charles Greenlee, Samuel Shepherd, and Walter Irvin—four men whose names became synonymous with one of the most notorious civil rights cases in American history.

The compensation follows a series of historic actions taken by the state over the past decade, including a formal apology in 2017, posthumous pardons in 2019, and exoneration in 2021, when Florida officially recognized that the men should never have been convicted.

For generations, the Groveland Four case has stood as a stark reminder of how racism, fear, and injustice operated in the Jim Crow South. Today, it serves as both a cautionary tale and a testament to the persistence of families who refused to let the truth be buried.

A Summer Night That Changed Everything – The story began in July 1949 on a rural road in Lake County. Seventeen-year-old Norma Padgett and her estranged husband, Willie Padgett, reported that their car had broken down near Groveland. They told authorities that four Black men had abducted and raped Norma.

Within hours, the accusation ignited racial tensions throughout Central Florida.

The accused men were Ernest Thomas, 26; Charles Greenlee, 16; and World War II veterans Samuel Shepherd and Walter Irvin. In the racially segregated South of the late 1940s, an allegation involving a white woman and Black suspects often led to swift judgment long before any evidence could be examined. For the Groveland Four, the presumption of innocence never existed.

Mob Violence and Coerced Confessions – As news of the accusation spread, violence quickly followed. Thomas fled after learning of the charges against him. A massive armed posse, reportedly numbering nearly 1,000 men and aided by bloodhounds, searched for him across Lake County. Several days later, Thomas was found sleeping beneath a tree and was shot to death.

Meanwhile, Greenlee, Shepherd, and Irvin were arrested and taken to the Lake County jail in Tavares.

According to historical accounts, the men were severely beaten while in custody. Authorities sought confessions through intimidation and violence. Irvin refused to confess despite the abuse.

Outside the jail, racial tensions escalated. An angry mob burned Samuel Shepherd’s family home to the ground. The atmosphere surrounding the case made a fair trial virtually impossible.

Convictions Amid a Climate of Fear – The three surviving defendants were tried before an all-white jury. Despite serious questions about the evidence and allegations of misconduct by law enforcement, all three men were convicted.

Because he was only 16 years old, Charles Greenlee received a life sentence. Samuel Shepherd and Walter Irvin were sentenced to death.

The convictions drew national attention and became a rallying point for civil rights advocates, particularly the NAACP Legal Defense Fund. Leading the legal challenge was a young attorney named Thurgood Marshall, who would later become the first Black justice on the United States Supreme Court. Marshall argued that the defendants had been denied their constitutional rights. He pointed to the inflammatory publicity surrounding the case and the exclusion of Black citizens from jury service.

In 1951, the United States Supreme Court agreed, overturning the convictions of Shepherd and Irvin and ordering a new trial. For many, it appeared justice might finally prevail. Instead, the case took an even darker turn.

The Shooting on a Lake County Road – On November 6, 1951, Sheriff Willis McCall was transporting Shepherd and Irvin from Raiford State Prison back to Lake County for the retrial.

According to McCall, the two men attempted to escape while handcuffed. He responded by opening fire. Samuel Shepherd was killed instantly.

Walter Irvin survived despite suffering serious wounds. From his hospital bed, Irvin told investigators that there had been no escape attempt and that the shooting was a deliberate act.

The incident drew national scrutiny and intensified concerns about racial injustice in Florida. Yet even after surviving the shooting, Irvin’s legal ordeal was not over.

At his second trial, he again faced an all-white jury. Once more, he was convicted and sentenced to death. The sentence was later commuted to life imprisonment. Irvin was eventually paroled in 1968 but died the following year. Greenlee was released in 1962 after serving more than a decade behind bars and lived until 2012.

By then, all four men were gone.

Families Keep the Story Alive – Although the legal proceedings ended decades ago, the families of the Groveland Four never stopped fighting to clear their loved ones’ names.

Children and grandchildren carried the story forward, speaking publicly about the injustice and urging government officials to revisit the case.

Their efforts gained traction as historians, journalists, legal scholars, and civil rights advocates reexamined the evidence and documented the racial climate that shaped the prosecutions.

The publication of the Pulitzer Prize-winning book Devil in the Grove introduced the case to a new generation, chronicling both the ordeal of the Groveland Four and Thurgood Marshall’s determination to challenge racial injustice in the courts.

As public awareness grew, so did calls for official action.

Florida Confronts Its Past – In 2017, the Florida Legislature formally apologized for the injustice suffered by the Groveland Four. Two years later, Governor Ron DeSantis and the Florida Executive Clemency Board unanimously approved posthumous pardons for all four men.

The decision was widely viewed as an important acknowledgment that the state’s justice system had failed them. But many family members and supporters argued that a pardon alone was not enough. A pardon implies forgiveness. The families wanted recognition that the men were innocent.

That recognition came in November 2021.

A Florida judge formally exonerated the Groveland Four, vacating the convictions and affirming that the prosecutions had been fundamentally unjust.

For descendants who had spent decades seeking justice, the ruling represented a turning point. The state had finally moved beyond forgiveness and acknowledged innocence.

The memorial honors Ernest Thomas, Charles Greenlee, Samuel Shepherd, and Walter Irvin while reminding future generations of the consequences of prejudice and the importance of equal justice under the law.

What was once a story known primarily to civil rights historians has become part of Florida’s public memory.

The Meaning of Justice – Norma Padgett never recanted her allegation. She died in 2024 at the age of 92. Yet decades of historical review, legal analysis, and government action led state leaders to conclude that the Groveland Four were denied the fundamental protections promised by the American justice system.

No amount of compensation can restore the lives lost, the years spent in prison, or the suffering endured by generations of family members.

Still, the recent $4 million award to the descendants carries symbolic weight. Combined with the state’s apology, pardons, exoneration, and public memorial, it represents Florida’s acknowledgment of one of its most painful chapters.

The story of the Groveland Four is no longer simply a tale of injustice. It is also a story of perseverance—a reminder that while justice delayed can never fully heal old wounds, the pursuit of truth can endure across generations.

More than seven decades after that summer night in 1949, the names Ernest Thomas, Charles Greenlee, Samuel Shepherd, and Walter Irvin have finally been restored to the historical record—not as criminals, but as victims of a profound miscarriage of justice.

United Arts of Central Florida is investing $150,000 directly into 30 professional artists and creative entrepreneurs across Orange, Seminole, Osceola, and Lake counties, a $50,000 increase over last year that will help bring new performances, exhibitions, workshops, and educational programs to communities throughout 2026 and 2027.

Announced as part of the 2026–2027 Individual Artist Awards, the funding supports both project-based work and professional development for artists whose practices span music, theater, dance, literature, photography, painting, mixed media, illustration, and history and science. Thirty recipients were selected through a competitive review process by a volunteer panel of arts professionals and community leaders who evaluated more than 100 applications.

The investment reflects United Arts’ broader vision for a thriving arts ecosystem and the importance of artists to the region’s identity and economy.

“Local artists help tell the authentic stories of who we are as a region,” said Jennifer Evins, President and CEO of United Arts of Central Florida. “This year’s Individual Artist Awards support projects that preserve culture, strengthen communities, encourage dialogue, and invite people of all backgrounds to experience the arts in meaningful ways. We are proud to invest in these talented creatives whose work will enrich Central Florida for years to come.”

More than a dozen of this year’s funded projects center on community engagement, inviting residents to participate through workshops, performances, exhibitions, and collaborative artmaking. In all, 22 of the awards support project-based work that will bring new artistic experiences directly to the region.

For Lake County artist Nicora Gangi Manwaring, the award supports a deeper exploration of the region’s natural environment.

“The Individual Arts Award will enable me to explore through painting Lake County’s accessible lakes at dawn and dusk, revealing their distinctive character through the changing light and atmosphere,” said Gangi. “These discoveries will be shared through exhibitions and educational programs for participants in Vibrant and Healthy West Orange and the Mount Dora Center for the Arts. By demonstrating how color and a variety of artistic mediums capture these transformations, I hope to inspire the artist in us all with a deeper appreciation for our environment.”

This year Clermont Artist Dawn Viola was also recognized.

Together, the funded work demonstrates how artists are helping strengthen communities, preserve culture, inspire learning, and improve quality of life throughout Central Florida. Public event information will be available on ArtsInOrlando.com as projects are announced.

In recognition of National Pet Fire Safety Day, Orlando Cat Cafe will present a donation of pet oxygen masks to Lake County Fire Rescue during a special ceremony on Wednesday, July 15, at 10:00 am.

The presentation marks the ninth consecutive year Orlando Cat Cafe has donated this specialized life-saving equipment to Lake County Fire Rescue, bringing the community one step closer to its goal of equipping every fire apparatus in Lake County with reusable pet oxygen masks.

The cat-sized oxygen masks.

National Pet Fire Safety Day was established by the American Kennel Club and ADT Security Services to help reduce the estimated 50,000 pets affected by home fires each year. This nationwide awareness day educates pet owners about the risks of leaving pets home alone and promotes proven fire prevention measures to help keep them safe. The reusable Wag’N Pet Oxygen Mask Kits include three different-sized masks and can be used on a variety of animals, including dogs, cats, ferrets, rabbits, guinea pigs, birds, and more.

“Our pets are family members, and firefighters routinely risk their own lives to rescue them during emergencies,” said Sandra Cagan, Founder and CEO of Orlando Cat Cafe. “National Pet Fire Safety Day is the perfect opportunity to recognize the incredible work of our first responders while providing them with equipment that can make the difference between life and death for a beloved pet. We are honored to continue this tradition for the ninth year.”

Lake County Fire Rescue personnel will join Orlando Cat Cafe representatives and local elected officials for the presentation, celebrating a partnership dedicated to protecting both people and animals throughout the community.

Since launching this initiative, Orlando Cat Cafe has remained committed to supporting first responders while advancing its broader mission of improving animal welfare throughout Central Florida.

“Losing a pet due to a house fire is a devastating experience. As most pet owners leave their furry companions home alone during the day, pets are left to fend for themselves in the event of a fire. Unlike humans, who instinctively flee, pets often hide, making rescue more difficult. Far too many die each year from smoke asphyxiation,” said Sandra Cagan, owner of the Orlando Cat Café. “While firefighters do their best to save pets from burning homes, they can’t always revive them without the proper equipment. That’s why pet oxygen masks are so important. These specially designed masks can be used on both conscious pets suffering from smoke inhalation and those that have lost consciousness due to toxic fumes. Our responders have in fact used these masks on pets in our community, making this annual donation very meaningful. Every year we move closer to our vision of ensuring every fire truck in Lake County carries this specialized equipment,” Cagan said. “It’s a simple investment that has the potential to save countless animal lives.”

National Pet Fire Safety Day serves as an annual reminder for pet owners to include their animals in family emergency preparedness plans, practice fire safety at home, and support first responders who respond to emergencies involving pets.

As residents prepare to celebrate America’s 250th Independence Day, Lake County Fire Rescue is reminding the community to put safety first when using fireworks and participating in holiday festivities.

Fireworks are a popular part of Fourth of July celebrations, but they can quickly lead to serious injuries, fires, and property damage when not handled properly. Residents should take precautions and make responsible decisions throughout the holiday weekend.

Never allow children to handle or ignite fireworks.

Keep water readily available whenever fireworks are being used.

Follow all manufacturer instructions and warning labels.

Never attempt to relight malfunctioning fireworks.

Use fireworks away from homes, vehicles, dry vegetation, and other combustible materials.

Never use fireworks while impaired by alcohol or drugs.

Properly dispose of used fireworks by soaking them in water before placing them in the trash.

Attend professionally conducted fireworks displays

Lake County Fire Rescue reminds everyone that a few moments of caution can help prevent injuries, fires, and property damage.
The City of Clermont Fire Department celebrated the in-service status of a brand-new fire engine, Engine 102, with a “Push-Back” ceremony on Monday, June 29th at Clermont Fire Station 2, 2200 Hartwood Marsh Road. The engine is a Pierce make, dual-function engine, delivered recently from the Pierce Manufacturer located in Appleton, Wisconsin.

The engine, which is an addition to the station fleet, is equipped with all-new equipment. The new engine will replace Tower Engine 5 as Tower Engine 5 is being transferred to a temporary Fire Station in the Wellness Way community of Clermont. Plans are underway for a permanent station, Station 5, that will be located on Scoffield Road, near Wellness Way Boulevard. Construction is scheduled to begin soon, with a 9-month completion date scheduled.

Fire service history continues the decades-old tradition of pushing a new engine backwards into the fire station bay for its first time in service, more affectionately recognized as a “Wet-down and Push-Back Ceremony.” The tradition began in the late 1800’s when fire departments used hand-drawn pumpers and horse-drawn equipment. Upon returning to the fire station after a fire call, the horses could not easily back the equipment into the station, so they were disconnected from the fire equipment, and firefighters would push the apparatus back into the bays themselves. Before pushing the apparatus back in the bay, the firefighters would also wash down and prepare the pumpers and the horses before readying both for the next fire call.

Clermont Fire Chief David Ezell announced big plans for the department’s future during the ceremony. Plans that will accommodate the enormous growth that Clermont is currently experiencing include the complete renovation and enlargement of Fire Station 2 on Hartwood Marsh Road. The station was built in 2001 as a model home for the Kings Ridge subdivision when that development was underway. The City of Clermont eventually bought the building and remodeled it to accommodate one fire engine and two firefighters. As growth continued in the south end of Clermont, a second remodel to the station was needed to house an additional fire engine and additional personnel. An open house tour of the station during today’s ceremony revealed cramped quarters and inadequate equipment storage. A station that was intended to house two firefighters now houses eight personnel, at a minimum.

Chief Ezell also announced plans for a sixth fire station soon. Fire Station 6 will be located on Old Highway 50, near County Road 455 in the extreme northeast portion of the city. Personnel and apparatus assignments for the new station are not official yet, but are very much in the active planning stage, according to Chief Ezell.

The Lake County Board of County Commissioners will celebrate America’s 250th birthday with the unveiling of a new America250 monument outside the Lake County Historical Museum in downtown Tavares. The county will host a public ceremony at 8:30 am on Thursday, July 2.

The monument, being installed in front of the museum near the historic courthouse, is part of Lake County’s ongoing America250 celebration honoring the nation’s semiquincentennial. The unveiling ceremony will include remarks from County representatives.

“The story of America is also the story of local communities like ours,” said Lake County Chairwoman Leslie Campione. “This monument is a reminder of the freedoms we enjoy, the sacrifices made by generations before us, and the responsibility we all share to preserve those ideals for future generations. We are proud to celebrate America250 here in Lake County.”

The monument highlights key moments in national, state, and local history, including Lake County’s formation in 1887 and the region’s role in Florida’s agricultural, transportation, and tourism industries.

“This monument creates a lasting opportunity for residents and visitors to reflect on our nation’s history and Lake County’s place within it,” Campione said.

The America250 monument joins several other Lake County initiatives recognizing the nation’s 250th anniversary, including historical photo campaigns, community partnerships, educational outreach, and patriotic displays throughout the county.

The Lake County Historical Museum is located at 317 W. Main St. in downtown Tavares.
