Lake-Sumter State College’s Continuing Education will offer the following courses beginning in the fall semester.

Continuing Education courses are non-credit courses offered to support or enhance business, industry, government, and general recreation in the communities of Lake and Sumter Counties.

RETIREMENT PLANNING SOLUTIONS

This program provides a practical, hands-on overview of the key areas of retirement planning. It is designed for individuals and couples who are in the early stages of planning, about to retire, or already retired. The program is presented in a neutral, educational format without promoting any specific financial or insurance products.

DENTAL ASSISTING

This program is designed for individuals who want to gain basic knowledge and skills necessary to enter the professional field of dental assisting. The program has an internship of 32 hours. The class is made up of lecture and clinical, hands-on training, and provides training needed to step right into a dental office as a qualified assistant.

FLORIDA CHILDCARE PROFESSIONAL CREDENTIAL (FCCPC)

This 120-hour course prepares you for earning the Florida Child Care Professional Credential (FCCPC). In this program, you will demonstrate competency to meet the specific needs of children as well as working directly with parents and other adults to nurture a child’s physical, social, emotional, and intellectual growth. Those who pass this course are awarded their FCCPC certificate.

FCCPC Application Qualifications: (1) be at least 18 years old, (2) be able to speak, read, and write well enough to fulfill the responsibilities of a FCCPC candidate, (3) sign a statement of ethical conduct, (4) be observed as a lead caregiver, (5) have a minimum of a high school diploma or GED, (6) have completed 40 hours of state-mandated online training, and (7) be employed or be volunteering in a daycare or preschool setting.

CERTIFIED PERSONAL TRAINER

This program is designed to give individuals the knowledge, practice, and experience they need in order to be successful in the fitness industry. Offered as a hybrid course, registrants will receive 16 hours of academic instruction online and 16 hours of hands-on practical training. Course-takers must pass both Level 1 and Level 2 certifications to receive the National Certificate.

JAZZ BAND

The Jazz Band is open to the community to players of all levels, and offers players the opportunity to play a wide variety of music. Each semester culminates with a free concert open to the community.

BEGINNER’S SPANISH 1

This program is designed for students with little or no previous study of the Spanish language. Registrants will acquire the fundamentals of pronunciation and grammar, practical vocabulary building, useful phrases and the ability to understand, read, write, and speak simple Spanish. The program focuses on all four language skills, including listening, speaking, reading, and writing. The program introduces beginning conversation and every-day aspects of the contemporary Spanish-speaking world.

BEGINNER’S SPANISH 2 (CONVERSATIONAL)

This program is an introduction to the Spanish language with emphasis on conversation, pronunciation and vocabulary building. The course will also cover the fundamentals of grammar as well as introducing basic cultural concepts for the various countries that speak Spanish.
