The Montverde Academy theatre department proudly announces the theatrical line-up for the 2019-20 season. These memorable theatrical presentations feature the Academy’s award-winning student performers who bring the characters to life on spectacular sets with impressive costumes that will captivate audiences. All performances take place in the Sandra O. Stephens Fine Arts Theatre, 17235 Seventh Street in Montverde, FL 34756.

“The Hunchback of Notre Dame” – based on the Victor Hugo novel, with songs from the Disney animated feature.

In the age-old struggle of good and evil, “The Hunchback of Notre Dame” tells the story of Quasimodo, the reclusive hunchbacked bell-ringer of Notre Dame, who courageously ventures into the outside world where he meets and falls in love with Esmerelda, a gypsy. At the same time, archdeacon Dom Claude Frollo, Quasimodo’s master and tormentor, and captain of the guard, Phoebus de Martin, also fall in love with the beautiful gypsy. The sweeping score and compelling story will captivate audiences!

“Glass Menagerie” – by Tennessee Williams

This groundbreaking memory play by Tennessee Williams is told by Tom Wingfield, an aspiring poet whose father ran off years earlier, leaving him to support his mother, Amanda, and painfully shy sister, Laura, by working in a shoe warehouse. Follow the tale of a delicate glass unicorn, family ties and heartbreaking drama in this American classic.

 “Medea” – by Euripides

An ancient Greek tragedy and the best-known play by Euripides, “Medea,” is based upon the myth of Jason and Medea and originally produced in 431 B.C. Medea vows revenge on her husband, who has been deserted her husband for a Greek princess. Using her magic, she exacts vengeance on Jason by murdering his new wife and her own children, escaping to Athens to live her days in grief.

 “Mama Mia!” – by Catherine Johnson, Benny Andersson and Bjorn Ulvaeus

A vibrant musical that features the legendary music of Abba, “Mamma Mia!” tells the story of Sophie’s pursuit of a perfect wedding that includes the tradition of the father, whom she doesn’t know, giving away the bride. The musical features flashback to the escapades that Donna, Sophie’s mom, experienced in the past with three potential “dads” that lead us to the present. Who is Sophie’s dad? You’ll enjoy singing along to memorable Abba tunes to find out!

“Twelfth Night” – by William Shakespeare

“Twelfth Night,” also know, as “What You Will,” is a comedy by William Shakespeare and an allusion to the night of festivity preceding the Christian celebration of the Epiphany, which is the cultural origin of the story’s confusing plot. This love triangle combines love, mistaken identities and joyful discovery in this beloved Shakespearean masterpiece.
