UF/IFAS Lake County Extension, the University of Florida’s local Extension campus in Tavares, will be offering a variety of educational programs for the public during the month of September.

Thursday, September 19 

The National Diabetes Prevention Program Extension will host an informational session. If you have prediabetes or risk factors for type 2 diabetes, this program is an opportunity to take charge of your health. The full program will run for 12 months and can help participants make lasting changes such as losing a modest amount of weight, being more physically active, and managing stress.

UF/IFAS Lake County Livestock Agent Megan Mann, along with other livestock agents from throughout Central Florida, will be hosting the annual Equine Institute and Allied Trade Show in Ocala on September 19. This event showcases equine experts speaking on topics important to horse owners in Central Florida. Saturday, September 21

The Discovery Gardens at UF/IFAS Lake County Extension will be open for their monthly Saturday in the Gardens program on Saturday, Sept. 21. UF/IFAS Lake County Residential Horticulture Agent Brooke Moffis will be presenting a program on landscaping with native plants that morning from 10 am until noon. Pre-registration for this program is available for $5.00 online at https://lakegardeningprograms.eventbrite.com or at the door for $6. The Discovery Gardens is also open to the public Monday through Friday from 9 am- 4 pm.

Tuesday, September. 24

Dr. Juanita Popenoe, UF/IFAS Lake County Extension Commercial Fruit Production Agent will be hosting a Produce Safety Alliance Grower Training at the Extension Office in Tavares. Fruit and vegetable growers and others interested in learning about food safety practices are encouraged to attend.

Wednesday, September 25

Mann will also teach horse and livestock owners how to recognize, eradicate, and prevent toxic pasture weeds. This class is on September 25 and runs from 6 pm to 8 pm and pre-registration is required online at https://poisonpasture.eventbrite.com.

Saturday, September 28

The UF/IFAS Lake County Extension will be hosting a Fresh From the Garden program on September. 28 that offers participants the opportunity to learn new ways to create mouthwatering recipes based on produce grown in the Discovery Gardens. Preregistration is required online at https://fcslake.eventbrite.com. This program will run from 10 am – noon and space is limited to the first 25 registrants.
