Clermont Historic Village

by Donna Digennaro, Clermont Historic Center

The Clermont Historical Society is looking for female uniforms from World War II to add to a display in the Clermont Historic Village’s Quonset hut.

The hut was built on site in 1943 to house soldiers that were training for the war effort.  The Historical Society refurbished the interior and opened it to the public as a World War II Museum.  Over the years generous donors have given some amazing items that are on display.  There are even many male uniforms.

But when it comes to the ladies, all we have are some great nurse and axillary nurse uniforms.  Not that their role wasn’t very important in the war effort, but women did so much more from driving various vehicles, working in motor pools, transmitting messages, and even serving as test pilots.  If at all possible, the Historical Society would love to be able to add some of those uniforms to its collection To speak with someone regarding making a donation, please call Roxanne Brown at 352-242-7734.

The Historic Village is located at 490 West Avenue in downtown Clermont and will be opened on Saturdays and Sundays from 1:00 to 4:00 PM.  Admission to the Village is free but a donation of $5.00 for each adult is requested.

If you are interested in the history of Clermont or in history in general, why don’t you consider joining the Clermont Historical Society?  Membership is just $25.00 per person or $35.00 for a couple annually.  The board meeting (open to the public) is at 6:00 PM followed by a presentation at 7:00 PM.

Opportunities for rentals will have to wait for phase 3 of reopening by the state and for the completion of the work on West Avenue. For questions or further information please call 352-242-7734.  We hope to see you all when the Village reopens!
