Clermont Police Department

Mr. Wallace Sims Wainwright (81), the subject charged in the officer-involved shooting incident in Clermont on August 5, was pronounced deceased in the hospital on August 13. A preliminary report from the Medical Examiner’s Office lists the cause of death as a gunshot wound of the right flank and complications thereof.  A complete report from the Medical Examiner’s Office is expected in four to six weeks, which will include any and/or all other significant conditions contributing to death.

On 08/05/22, at approximately 8:15 pm, the Clermont Fire Department and EMS responded to a residence located at the 1400 Block of W. Hwy. 50 (Emeral Lakes) for a medical call. The call was made by the wife of the subject, who both reside at this residence.

Shortly after arrival, Wainwright displayed a firearm and began firing his weapon. No Clermont Fire Department or EMS personnel were injured, however, they immediately left the scene to a safe location and called for police assistance. Clermont Police Officers responded and upon arrival began receiving gunfire from the subject. A Clermont Police Officer returned gunfire striking the subject at which time the subject stopped firing his weapon. The officers were able to secure the firearm and immediately began providing medical attention.

The subject was transported to a local trauma center to receive medical attention and was reportedly in stable condition. No officers were injured during this incident. 

Mr. Wainwright’s next of kin has been notified. Clermont Police Department Officers and Investigators continue to cooperate with the Florida Department of Law Enforcement’s Investigation.
