The Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5277 and the Women’s Auxiliary Unit, Clermont held its annual student scholarship and teacher appreciation luncheon on Saturday, January 14th.
 
Local students were recognized by both the post and the auxiliary unit for winning entries in a student essay contest themed “My Pledge to Veterans”. The essay opportunity is offered to high school level students and contains categories such as Ways to honor our Veterans and a Voice of Democracy.
 
Stanley Lay, post spokesperson introduced each winner and presented recipients with scholarship certificates and other mementos from the post, including funds to be applied towards the winner’s continuing education. 
 
Martin Fantana

First place winner of the “Ways to honor our Veterans” category was Martin Fantana. Fantana also received a patriot’s pin in recognition of his well-written essay. 

Moriah Langford
First place winner of the “Voice of Democracy” category was Moriah Langford. The second-place winner was Destiny Vaughn (not pictured), and third place winner was Paul Saratovtsev (not pictured). 
Cheryl Rydzewski
The ceremony was highlighted with the “Teacher of the Year” award presented to Cheryl Rydzewski of Magic Moments Learning School, Clermont. Rydzewski, who has 30 years of service to the education field, not only serves as a teacher but also serves in the director’s position for Magic Moments.
