In Ms. Salazar’s AP Spanish class, students have been exploring the theme of “Families and Communities.” Last week, the class wrapped up the unit with a special focus: “During Hispanic Heritage Month, the celebration of our diverse cultures takes center stage,” said Ms. Salazar. “While we often highlight celebrities, politicians, and athletes during this time, it’s equally important to recognize the contributions of everyday individuals who may not be famous but have made a significant impact as role models.”

The class invited Srta. Legna Lindor Lebron, Middle School Spanish Teacher, as a guest speaker. “Her experiences and insights as a humble yet influential figure in her community align perfectly with the themes we’ve been discussing.” said Ms. Salazar. “She embodies the values of family and community, showing us how positive contributions can come from anyone, not just those in the spotlight.”

During her visit, in a casual interview-like setting and format, students were able to apply the skills they have been practicing—speaking, listening, and writing—three essential components of the AP Spanish exam. They asked Srta. Lindor questions pertaining to her upbringing, culture, background, and career. Srta. Lindor’s responses offered not only inspiration but also practical material for the students’ next project, where they will craft an article based on the interview. The entire conversation was conducted in Spanish.

This activity was a powerful way to bridge classroom learning with real-world applications while celebrating the rich Hispanic culture and heritage that surrounds us.
