During the Lower School Assembly on Monday, September 9, fourth-grader Christian Huynh was awarded the first-place prize for growing the largest cabbage in MVA’s third-grade class for the annual Bonnie Plants 3rd Grade Cabbage Program, weighing in at 18.2 pounds.\

Christian went above and beyond to care for his cabbage. He did his research, gave it the name Hulk to give it something to aspire to, placed it in a “McMansion” pot, and protected it from the cold. And then, when his cabbage was nearly destroyed during a hailstorm, Christian refused to give up, working tirelessly to nurse it back to health. “I’m so proud of his efforts,” said Mrs. Pat Whiffen, the Lower School science teacher.

A representative from Bonnie Plants, the host of the cabbage-growing contest, was so impressed by his story of perseverance that he honored Christian with a 50-dollar Visa gift card.

“This year was a banner year for cabbages to be weighed,” continued Mrs. Whiffen. Thirty-six children participated in the contest, and 16 brought them in to be weighed. Nora Kelly won second place with her 12.8-pound cabbage, and Priscilla Quindemil won third with her 12.2-pound cabbage.

Congratulations to the winners and to all who participated!
