Lake County law enforcement agencies will take part in the Special Olympics Florida’s annual Law Enforcement Torch Run on March 28, with the run kicking off at the Special Olympics Florida State Office in Clermont.
Personnel from multiple agencies in Lake County will participate in the run. The race will begin for walkers at 9:45 am and runners at 10:00 am The Torch Run is law enforcement’s annual worldwide campaign to raise money in support of Special Olympics and its athletes. In Florida, officers from over 300 local, state, and federal agencies take part, with 5,000 officers carrying the torch on a 1,500-mile relay through 67 counties. The run ends at the opening ceremonies of Special Olympics Florida’s State Summer Games.
Funds are also generated through the sale of the popular Torch Run T-shirts and hats, and through various local fundraising events like Tip-A-Cop where law enforcement personnel volunteer their time as “celebrity waiters” in restaurants. Since its inception in 1981, the LETR has raised more than $1 billion for Special Olympics programs across the globe.
