We’ve all heard the phrase “put on a happy face,” but sometimes we forget just how powerful that simple act can be—until someone reminds us.

Recently, I took a trip to Disney with my family. As we approached the admission gate, I braced myself for a hassle. Maybe my pass wouldn’t scan; maybe there’d be some mix-up;  maybe I’d end up in yet another unnecessary argument, the kind that seems to follow us in everyday life lately.

But instead, something unexpected happened.

The gate attendant greeted me with a huge smile and a cheerful “Good morning!”—the kind of warm Disney welcome I hadn’t experienced in a long while. For a moment, I was confused. It caught me so off guard that I had to pause. Had it really been that long since a stranger greeted me with kindness, without frustration, without judgment, without an argument waiting around the corner?

That simple smile—genuine, effortless, sincere—lit up my entire day.

For nearly 30 years, I worked at Disney. I met people from around the world, and every day I tried to give them what we called a “Disney Day”—a moment of magic, kindness, understanding, and joy. I believed in it. I lived it. I loved watching one smile spark another and another, like a chain reaction of good energy.

But after retiring, the world felt different. People were quicker to argue. Quicker to judge. Quicker to assume the worst. Smiles became rare, replaced too often by impatience, stress, or even outright hostility. It made that cheerful greeting at the entrance gate feel like a gift I didn’t realize I needed.

And it reminded me of something important:

Smiles still matter. Maybe now more than ever.

A smile softens the edges of a hard day.
It makes strangers feel seen.
It disarms frustration.
It promotes kindness, connection, and compassion—without costing a single thing.

To all the Disney cast members who continue to bring joy, thank you for giving me a true Disney Day. You reminded me that kindness is contagious, and that one smile really can shift the entire tone of someone’s day.

And to everyone else… maybe it’s time we reclaim the simple power of the happy face. Not because life is perfect—not at all—but because choosing kindness lifts us all.

So here’s to more Disney Days, more warm greetings, more patience, and more smiles.

Sometimes the smallest spark is all it takes to bring back a little magic. Cheers!
