Caitlyn McGhee, City of Tavares
The City of Tavares earned three honors in the 2026 America in Bloom National Awards program: the Environmental Initiatives Outstanding Achievement Award, the First Impressions: Gateways Award and the AIB Cheerleader Award, presented to City employee and program facilitator Traci Anderson.
Tavares has participated in America in Bloom since 2017. Each spring, participating cities of similar population size host two America in Bloom advisors, who receive a community profile and itinerary before their visit. The evaluation considers community vitality, overall impression, environmental initiatives, heritage celebration, urban forestry, landscaped areas, floral impact and community involvement, with communities showcasing efforts across governmental, business and residential sectors.
Recognition for Environmental Leadership
Tavares received the Environmental Initiatives Outstanding Achievement Award for efforts that protect natural resources, promote sustainability and support a healthier environment for current and future generations.
America in Bloom advisors Douglas Airhart and Diane Blazek praised the City’s approach in their evaluation:
“City of Tavares exemplifies environmental leadership through its proactive, whole community approach to sustainability and watershed protection. Situated along Lake Dora, Tavares has prioritized lakefront stewardship by integrating innovative green infrastructure throughout its municipal design.”
The advisors highlighted several City services and initiatives, including twice-weekly garbage collection and a partnership with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. They recognized the value of ecologically sustainable stormwater ponds that support wildlife, protect the watershed from pollution and provide opportunities for recreational fishing programs.
The evaluation also commended efforts to replace older water meters to support conservation and consistently accurate readings. Community engagement through the Arbor Day Celebration, Water Day and Lake County Waterways Cleanup received recognition, along with the Tavares Public Library’s environmental resources, activities and seed catalog.
Main Street Gateway Earns National Honor
Tavares also received the First Impressions: Gateways Award for the recently installed gateway at the western end of Main Street. The structure reflects the architecture and identity of America’s Seaplane City, creating a distinctive and welcoming entrance for visitors.
The recognition is part of America in Bloom’s special awards program, which highlights outstanding accomplishments in participating communities.
Traci Anderson Recognized for Lasting Contributions
City employee and America in Bloom program facilitator Traci Anderson received the America In Bloom (AIB) Cheerleader Award for her longstanding leadership and dedication to the program.
More than a decade ago, Anderson championed the idea of bringing America in Bloom to Tavares. Her vision and persistence helped establish Tavares as the first city in Lake County to participate and laid the foundation for a nationally recognized community improvement effort.
With support from the Lake County Board of County Commissioners and the Tavares leadership team, Anderson also helped initiate the Lake County Chapter of America in Bloom. The first county chapter in the nation, it has become a model being replicated in other states. Other Lake County communities active in the program have included Astatula, Eustis, Groveland, Leesburg and Mount Dora.
Through years of advocacy and coordination, Anderson has helped strengthen Tavares’ environmental and beautification initiatives while encouraging broader participation throughout the county. Her continued commitment reflects leadership, creativity and civic pride at the heart of the program.
