Senator John McCain is a decorated war hero as well as an American Patriot
During the Vietnam War, the aircraft of John McCain, a young Navy pilot, was shot down over Hanoi. The severely injured pilot was captured and spent nearly 6 years in one of the worst prisons in Hanoi. He refused to be a pawn of the North Vietnam government thus was beaten, tortured and spent nearly 6 years as a POW, 2 years in solitary confinement.
Many would come home after such a horrific experience broken and bitter. John McCain came home determined to face the world on his own terms. The courageous war hero remained loyal to his country, serving his country for over six decades. Lovingly called the Maverick, Senator McCain placed his country’s well-being ahead of his political affiliations. He put partisanship aside to do the right thing and will always be remembered for placing the greater good above the good of himself or his party.
President Trump commented that McCain was not a war hero just because he got captured, stating, “I like people who weren’t captured”. Trump missed the point. Senator McCain is not a war hero just because he got captured while defending his country but an American hero and patriot because of his honorable character, courage and integrity during his imprisonment, as well as his exemplary behavior over the decades.
Senator John McCain will be missed. America needs more heroes.
