Leesburg High School Construction Academy will be working with local professional builders and Habitat For Humanity Lake-Sumter to build a home at 107 North 12th Street, Leesburg.  “The LHS Construction Academy is part of the school’s mission to prepare students for higher education but also for the workforce,” stated principal Michael Randolph. He was addressing a large crowd of local business leaders, school administrators, county officials, and students at the groundbreaking ceremony August 26th.  A representative from Senator Rick Scott’s office read a letter. Don McGruder RoMac Building Supply CEO and Academy advisory committee chairman, Dan Robuck II of RoMac and Danielle Stroud of Habitat For Humanity Lake-Sumter also addressed the group.

Diane Kornegay Lake County School Board Superintendent also told the story of the community-based beginnings of the Construction Academy.  When asked later she added, “we have established a small academy at South Lake High School.  We’ve got to work on that one next.” South Lake County (including Minneola, Clermont, and Groveland areas) are recognized as the fastest-growing population centers in Lake County.  Most of the current technical skills programs are based in north county.  South Lake residents, businesses and educators need to continue the forward progress to get more trade and vocational training opportunities.
