Singer, songwriter and actor, Alex Boyé (pronounced boy-yay) will present his “Bend Not Break” concert Saturday, February 1st at 6 pm at the Family Christian Center, 2500 S. Hwy 27, Clermont. The free concert is sponsored by Carlyle Holder Ministries and Southern Christian Leadership Foundation, Inc. Joining Boyé will be trumpet artist, Caleb Joseph and the Fidel Band and comedian Larry “Coop” D. Veal.
Alex Boyé is a multicultural and multigenerational artist who has performed throughout the world. Of Nigerian descent, Boyé was raised in London, England, where he began his musical career. He has developed a unique style with a blend of African-infused pop music and vibrant, dynamic visuals. His YouTube channel has over 1 billion views.
Boye’s most recent focus has been on youth suicide prevention and mental health awareness, founding the Bend Not Break Foundation. Boyé partnered with former American Idol judge Randy Jackson on the song and video “Bend Not Break” to bring a message of hope and awareness to those struggling with mental illness and considering suicide. “My purpose for this song and video is to help save lives. Even is it can save just one, then we have done something great!”, Boyé shared in a recent interview. In an article in USA Today, Boyé said, “When we encourage conversations about mental health and suicide, that’s when you get people to open up. As soon as the conversation begins that’s when the light comes in. Sometimes all it takes is music and just one song can lead to a breakthrough.”
According to The Center for Disease Control Vital Signs, suicide is a leading cause of death in the United States. In 2016, more than 45,000 lives were lost to suicide and in 2017, there were over 1.4 million suicide attempts reported. International reports list suicides as happening every 40 seconds somewhere in the world. The state of Florida has seen a 24% increase in the overall number of suicides. Suicides among African Americans increased by 33% and among Hispanics by 65% (data from the Florida Council for Community Mental Health and the Florida LINC Project).
Alex Boyé’s music and message are part of his national tour promoting hope and awareness. Doors for the concert will open at 5 pm with the concert starting at 6 pm. Donations will be accepted at the door.
