South Lake County residents gathered recently at the Clermont Community Center to experience the challenges faced by those living in poverty. The simulation exercise shed light on the pressing need for affordable housing and hunger relief in the community.

 

The Housing and Hunger Solutions luncheon was hosted by The Neighborhood Center of South Lake (NCSL) and Find Feed & Restore, in collaboration with various Lake County Social Services agencies and New Beginnings.  

 

“It was truly eye-opening to see officials and guests engaged in conversations about the challenges faced by many in the South Lake area”, said NCSL executive director Trish Kry. “Let’s continue to raise awareness and work together to address these critical issues for a stronger, more supportive community.”

On Saturday, September 25, the brothers met at the Wesley Center, located at the First United Methodist Church of Clermont.  Over a hundred supporters were there to cheer for both Cops and Clergy. The teams had their sites set on the prize— prestige and a worthy cause: Find, Feed & Restore.

Master of Ceremony DJ Wilson kicked off the evening. Clermont Battalion Sea Cadets presented the colors.

Although the Cops won, the Clergy took the loss quite well, though I wouldn’t doubt another challenge.

Brian Broadway briefly described how Find, Feed & Restore gives hope to the homeless.

The program provides families with children to live rent and utilities free for 6-12 months while offering budgeting classes, career assistance and mentoring. The organization provides the foundation necessary for families with children to develop and grow in a stable environment.

Broadway explained the three effective and strategic methods to help homeless families:

• Housing First (no-cost housing for 6-12 months),
• Permanent Housing Solutions (affordable housing for working families),
• Homelessness Avoidance (temporary assistance covering rent/mortgage/utility assistance for struggling families).

The program provides a stable, caring, and growth environment to families that includes food, shelter, career development, computer training, and job placement assistance.

Coming Soon: 

Lake Hope (Sports Camp). The Lake Hope facility is located in Groveland on 11 acres.  The organization is looking to close on this site in the latter part of May 2021.

Broadway proudly mentioned that FIND, FEED & RESTORE has housed and brought over 115 families to total independence.

Shannon brings more than 17 years of fundraising, event management and non-profit experience to the position. She joins the organization from New Beginnings of Central Florida where she served as Director of Development for two and a half years serving the homeless. She has also served in the fundraising capacity for Montverde Academy, Cambridge Christian School, The Spring of Tampa Bay, and more. 

“We are thrilled to have Shannon join us to drive our critical fundraising efforts which help many families in Lake County,” said Broadway. “Her passion for our mission was evident as she has served as a Board member and volunteer for the organization for the past three years. While it will be a loss for our Board, we gain a dedicated champion for our mission who will help the organization achieve more as we continue to grow.”

“Serving Find Feed & Restore is a Christian mission I feel passionate about,” said Herrera. I’m excited to be a part of an organization that changes lives and is helping families in need into affordable, safe housing. It is gratifying.”

Shannon, originally from Buffalo, New York, earned her bachelor’s degree in business management at the University of Florida in Gainesville, Fla., and her MBA at the University of South Florida in Tampa, Fla. She and her husband, Michael, are the proud parents of four children, Ana, Fiona, Julia, and Merida, and currently, reside in Clermont. Shannon also serves on the board of the Lake Sumter State College Foundation.

The homeless family can stay rent and utilities free for 4 months. Each person is provided free case management services that include financial budgeting classes, credit report education, economic meal planning, interview preparation, resume writing along with professional counseling. After a 4-month period, the family begins to pay lot rent and utilities as they become self sufficient.

For less than .50 cents a day, a person’s life can be changed.  

Beta Theta, a chapter of Epsilon Sigma Alpha, has supported local charitable organizations and high school scholarships for 40 years. In 2019, Beta Theta held its 15th Mardi Gras Celebration, raising over $17,000 with all proceeds given to local 501-c3 and high school scholarships. This year, the philanthropic organization chose Find Feed & Restore as one of its local projects.
