Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to you Clermont!
It does not seem possible that 2023 is nearly over, but as I look back, I believe it was a good year here in Clermont. I plan to spend some holiday time with family and friends and then begin looking toward a new year.
As we make our way to holiday events, let’s remember there is more traffic on the streets and people on the sidewalks and in crosswalks. We all have places to get to, but let’s practice some patience, slow down a bit and all arrive at our destinations safely.
This year’s “Light Up Clermont” was outstanding! A fun theme of ugly sweaters and beautiful weather brought record crowds to downtown Clermont for our Friday night tree-lighting ceremony and our Saturday holiday parade. During both events, I was thrilled to see so many people with smiles on their faces enjoying the holiday spirit. The “Enchanted Forest of Trees” at Victory Pointe will remain in place until January 3. This year there are 70 holiday trees, beautifully decorated by Clermont organizations and businesses, and worth the trip to take it all in.
I did hear some comments that there were too many people at the events, but I think that is a good thing! I’d like to extend a special thanks to all the City staff who worked so hard to plan, organize, and execute these wonderful events for our community to enjoy.
We will kick start the New Year with a parade and special program in remembrance of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. on January 15 at Waterfront Park. February hosts the very popular “Great Clermont Campout” and spaces go fast. Visit our website for details on how you can join this fun as well as all the other upcoming City events.
I want to take a moment to remember Council Member Jim Purvis who transitioned to his heavenly home on December 11. I thank God for placing Jim in my life as it was a blessing and an honor to know and work with him. First on the code enforcement board and then on the City Council, I learned a great deal from Jim and will always cherish those memories. The City of Clermont and I will be forever in debt to Jim for his wisdom, insight, frankness, and above all, the love he bestowed upon the City.
The City was pleased to host the Lake Leagues of Cities and welcomed mayors and city managers from many of our neighbors. We enjoyed sharing milestones and challenges with old friends and new.
“Lunch with the Mayor” continues the first Tuesday of each month. On January 2, we will meet at Piesanos and on February 6 at The View Restaurant. If your schedule allows, I hope you will join us at noon for good food and conversation.
